An Easter Message From Bishop Sarah

"Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ
Alleluia Christ is risen. He is risen indeed, Alleluia
This is my final Easter letter as Acting Bishop of Durham and Bishop of Jarrow. I simply wished to say to you that I am deeply thankful to God for the years I have shared ministry with you in the Diocese of Durham and for your faithfulness in ministry. I know that the bishop I am and will be, has been shaped and refined here amongst you. I have learned my craft as a bishop in these years, which have been shaped by the challenges of the pandemic, the vacancy in see and complex national matters that we have navigated together, including our response to the safeguarding situations that have arisen in our Church. My testimony is that even in the darkest and hardest times there has always been that light of hope that is the person of Jesus Christ, who is faithful and meets us and speaks words of ‘Peace'
On Palm Sunday, I confirmed four candidates in St Cuthbert’s Hebburn and as they were handed the lighted candle, the outward sign of the inner light of faith, hope and love kindled in them by the Holy Spirit. I was struck again by that promise of light. This promise is proclaimed at Christmas and experienced at Easter, for ‘the light shines in the darkness and the darkness did not overcome it (John1: 5). Jesus promises, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life’ (John 8:12).
In St Cuthbert’s on Palm Sunday, I was reminded of my experience on the second Easter of the pandemic when we still could not meet in numbers or sing. I stood at the back of Durham Cathedral, just a handful of us there, suitably distanced, for the dawn liturgy, the nave a dark, cavernous silence stretching all around us. The Paschal candle was lit and it was carried down the nave, held high, towards the crossing as the words “The Light of Christ” were cried out. The few of us there followed that flickering small light that spoke of Jesus risen from the dead and the light that no darkness can extinguish, born though suffering, gifted in love to us. I have never forgotten that experience of walking in the dark behind the flame of hope in a time of pandemic. It is the strongest picture I have ever had of both the cost and the hope of following Jesus, for light is only really noticed in dark situations and places. When I lit my candle from that Paschal flame, I did so with awe and a hope rekindled. You too will have a picture and memory that speaks to you strongly. Call it to mind again. My prayer is that in our welcoming of the resurrection of Jesus Christ this Easter, as we light our Paschal candles and sing songs of joy, hope and trust will be renewed in us all as we turn to the future Christ calls us to.
On Palm Sunday, when our confirmation candidates held their candles high, we said to them, ‘shine as a light in the world to the glory of God the Father’. That is my prayer for you this Easter, that you will shine with the hope of Jesus Christ in the places that God has called and you will do so with a confidence that comes from knowing that whatever form darkness may take, it will not prevail. God will be glorified in you and through you and others drawn to that light. For God has ‘shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ’ (2 Cor: 4:6)."
Alleluia Christ is risen. He is risen indeed, Alleluia.
Happy Easter!
+Sarah
